After meeting up with Acuvue at BritMums Live this year, it got me wondering about my own experience of wearing contact lenses. I had chatted with them about my own daughter, then 11 and about to start secondary school and her wish to wear them. It wasn’t until I met them, that I knew that children as young as 5 wear lenses. Since that meeting Nia has started school and is loving wearing her new contacts.
I had worn glasses since I was around 13. I remember very vividly how I quickly went from being in a top set maths group to struggling over a couple of months. Most of the work we did in maths was done on a blackboard, and I couldn’t follow the new methods we were learning. I was embarrassed though, and took my time before admitting to my Mum, that I couldn’t see. So silly really looking back. I then wore glasses, up until I was around 20. I hated my glasses, and I mean really hated them. Yes they were a great in terms of my sight, but my confidence plummeted when I wore them. I got myself a job, before setting off to university, and saved up for my first pair of contacts. Back then I think I had yearly ones, costing around £120. It was a big investment back then, but I so desperately wanted to wear them. It was at this point that I got my confidence back. It sounds like such a flippant thing to say now, however contact lenses really did change the way I looked at myself. They gave me the freedom to wear make up the way I wanted to wear it, and get involved in sports that couldn’t previously.

I have terrible eyesight, being very short-sighted means as soon as I wake up in the morning, I need to put my glasses on, until I get ready for the day. I now wear reusable lenses and I’ve never looked back. They are so easy to look after, and I even have them delivered to my door, with all of the solutions. I still wear my glasses occasionally, still dislike them, but thanks to modern technology, I’ve now been able to buy glasses that have thin glass in them, so they are not quite as bad as they were in previous incarnations.
Its amazing really, that such a small thing has helped to give me so much more confidence.
