Unfortunately its one of the times of the year when burglaries increase. We are all super busy, perhaps take our eyes of the ball, and not take the necessary precautions that we usually do. It’s also a time when the opportunist thief can take a look at a home with a lights, tree, and presents underneath it, and view it as an easy target. Any time of the year that something like this happens though, it is awful and devastating for the victims. So I wanted to take the time today to discuss how burglar friendly your home is.
What measures do you have in place, have thought in any detail what you could do to deter burglars?
I thought I would share with you some research that’s been undertaken by Co-operative insurance, whom having spoken to the people at Unlock – a charity that supports those with criminal convictions. They produced some research after speaking to 25 former burglars in the UK, and are now sharing with us their findings of which home security measures really work, and its fascinating and worth while reading.
Most effective is movement activated security lights, CCTV cameras, an alarm and a dog that barks! We have all of these, so I breathed a sign of relief, and for once don’t mind that my dog will bark if he thinks someone is at the door, or trying to get in!
I was really surprised though that gravel driveways that are noisy wasn’t one, I’d always thought they were an affective deterrent, nor lights being on timers. Having said that it really does make sense as these are going on and off at the same time and would be easily spotted if a burglar had done his or her research. There are plenty of companies that can assist you with security measures, from Fast Keys and their secure locks to CCTV smart systems
The above link is most definitely worth having a read of, as are these government statistics HERE. Here is to a safe and happy Christmas for everyone.
