I’m just in the process of organising my daughters birthday party so I’ve been doing a little Potter research and thought I’d share the results with you. Children and adults alike have delighted in the magical world of Harry Potter since its inception into popular culture almost a decade ago. With such avid descriptions created by J.K Rowling and represented across all eight movies, the world of Hogwarts can easily be brought to life with a little imagination and you’ll be the most popular parent on the planet.
Muggles’ Quidditch

Quidditch is no longer a fictional game and has become an increasingly well regarded sport, played professionally across 20 countries worldwide. There’s no flying involved, but the muggle take on the game – a unique mix taken from rugby, dodgeball and tag – is fast becoming a popular choice outside of Hogwarts Castle.
A team consists of seven players: three chasers, two beaters, one keeper and one seeker. In between throwing bludgers and passing quaffles while running around with a broomstick between your legs, the aim of the game is to help your seeker catch the golden snitch. With a little thought, muggles’ quidditch can easily be adapted to a smaller group and is a great way to get your little Potter fans outside.
Get creative in the kitchen
Kids of all ages love getting busy in the kitchen, and getting creative as you bake themed cakes is fun and rewarding for everyone. There are so many Harry Potter themed culinary creations you can make, but my favourite has got to be Mandrake Cupcakes. Using mini ceramic plant pots as cupcake cases, bake chocolate sponges in the oven and decorate with little plastic babies with plant tops glued to their heads. Don’t forget to scream like a mandrake when your kids pull the cake from the pot!
Regular cupcakes could also be decorated with upturned sugar cones for wizard hats, or simply iced with lightning bolts or the colours of your favourite Hogwarts house. There are lots of fun quizzes online that will determine which topping everyone gets!
Potions Class
Bring the fictional world of Harry Potter to life with an enchanting potions class, mixing everyday items disguised as powerful ingredients. Grate soap to use as toenail clippings, collect herbs and mud from the garden and label bottles of vinegar, rubbing alcohol and baking power as Dragon Drool, Veritas Serum and Wartcap powder. You can mix some brilliant science-inspired potions which will fizz, bubble and burn – all popular reactions with budding Potion Masters.
Why not make edible potions too, like a batch of Babbling Beverage or the Elixir of Life? Be sure to supervise everything that’s going into these if you’re planning on consuming your little ones’ creations – a mix of colourful fruit juices works well.
Potter Piñata
There’s no denying it, the dementors were scary! But with this game your budding wizards will show these dark creatures who’s boss. Piñatas are actually quite easy to make and it turns out the dementor is one of the simplest.
Feeding on human happiness, it’s of upmost importance the kids destroy it quickly. Get them to shout ‘Expecto Patronum’ to ward off the dementor as they try and hit the treat-filled piñata with a broom sized wand.
What’s your favourite Harry Potter themed game to play with the kids? I’d love to know.
