John Lewis : Story Time

Last week I enjoyed a very lovely catch up at my local (Nottingham) John lewis.  Walking through the store, I saw many of the gorgeous products that have been created especially to celebrate its 150 year anniversary.  Its a huge celebration nationally as well as locally.  London has its very own mock up of the first store, as well as a roof top garden at the John Lewis on Oxford Street.  See the website for more details of upcoming events and details. Transforming Your Living Room for Summer

Summer Living Room

We are well and truly in the Summer season now, with hot days, and warm balmy evenings for the last week.  The weather really has been beautiful in the UK.  In this post I thought I would look at transforming your living room for Summer.

One of the hot trends for Summer 2013 is to add patterns and bold colours to a living room. So this is exactly what I did. I at first choose the rug, which reminded me of sweet-peas, the colours being very vibrant but summery. I then coordinated the living room around this key piece.

Colour can have a such a huge impact, and in summer it’s really a great excuse to ditch the gloomy colours and go all out! Colours that you can find outdoors are a great idea.  Even if we are forced inside with yet another wet summer, we can feel light and breezy in our ‘outside in’ creation.

There is a great selection of sofas and chairs at John Lewis, I choose a natural coloured linen sofa, as I thought it worked well with the summer scheme, adding the colour with a brightly coloured cushion.

Even in summer with light nights, lighting is important.  I choose to add pops of colour with my lamp shades, but with glass bases, to enhance the feeling of light and space. Keeping walls and curtains light will also help with the lighting of the whole room.

Don’t ditch candles in summer, they can still be used, as in affordable way to add colour to a room.  I love lighting candles, on a warm summers evening, but choose light and floral scents at this time of year. Or if you have all of your windows open, ones that ward off those pesky insects.

Botanicals are another hot favourite for 2013 summer living rooms.  You could go all out with true botanical prints on curtains, rugs, cushions and paintings in the room.  Or you could, as I have, choose a more abstract botanical image, that suggest flowers and plants.  Choosing botanicals this way, can really keep the room looking fresh, light and unfussy.  If you are hanging new curtains, try to choose fabric such as linen or cotton.

Layering different textures is always a popular, but is especially so for this summer. The use of lots of texture in a summer living room enhances the natural feeling plus the feeling of space.

Choose mirrored furniture, or a large mirror, to reflect light around the room.  Accent with wood and glass and a jute rug, keeping the look natural.  Silks, linen and metallic are also key in the fabrics

So what do you think to my design ideas, are you planning on making any changes to your décor this summer?
