Top Tips for Summer Jewellery
Happily, the often none-too-trustworthy British summer looks set to linger, warming our skins and lifting our moods, for a little while longer. But different degrees of summer require different looks – what might work when it’s sweltering will work less when it’s merely fair. And just as you’d adjust your outfits accordingly, you should do the same with your accessories, namely your jewellery – you don’t want to be sporting pearls with denim hotpants and a vest top, likewise a set of glass bangles with a dressed-up outfit for a summer wedding. Read on for some ideas on how to wear summer jewellery.
Necklaces
Think decorative and colourful when it comes to necklaces. The summer weather means wearing a lot of low-cut tops, meaning the décolleté area is just asking to be accessorised. In the daytime, Native-American pendant-style necklaces in leather with pastel-coloured stones create a hippy and retro vibe – you could also go for wooden pieces, too. When it comes to evening events, you might want to layer silver or gold necklaces, or even go for a bib necklace, made up of gems in an array of colours, keeping with the current vogue for the revival of that most flashy of early-noughties looks – Bling!
Bracelets
For your trips to the park, beach or lido, you don’t want to risk your best gold or silver bangles slipping off your wrist into the waters or sands. Instead think bright, brash and colourful, decorative and not decorous: glass, plastic or enamel, whether from Topshop or Tatty Devine, in the hottest pinks, deepest blues, zingy yellows and brightest reds. For a Summer of Love vibe, why not go for Pandora leather bracelets? These can even be adapted for a more sophisticated look when the sun’s gone over the yard-arm, as you can add charms to the bracelet; these come in silver, gold, pavé and Murano glass.
Earrings
Summer earrings are all about fun – demure looks be damned. This is all about blingy, should-length efforts featuring multi-coloured gems set in silver or gold surrounds. Costume jewellery is fine and adds to the overall fun, cheerful and youthful vibe that the season inspires in the best of us. These sorts of flash earrings, somewhat surprisingly, work brilliantly with bikinis! (But not perhaps one-piece bathing suits – they do require the more demure trad pearl earrings). But even if you do yearn for just a tiny bit of restraint with your summer earrings and favour some teardrop classics, go for the brightest, most dazzling colours – topaz, turquoise or rich, deep purples.
So remember, whatever your summer pleasures and however you take them – be sure you’ve accessorised the gilt to the hilt.
