I was asked if I would like to review a system called Ed Place over the summer. Ed Place is an interactive learning site for children to be given some on-line assignments, to compliment and supplement what they are already learning in school. Now I’m going to talk a little bit about the site later, but first I wanted to say why I chose to review Ed Place.
I am a big believer in children having free time to relax when not at school, especially during the school holidays. However I know that once children go back after a break, they can find it hard to get back into the school routine. I have always (well with my eldest Nia who is 11) given her projects to do during the summer. Keeping her brain active, and stretching it too. I think every day should have variety, and part of that should be quiet time.
I also find it really useful to know where your child is at. Miss A (who is 5) for example doesn’t bring homework home only reading, so it can be really useful to just spend a short time each day doing some extra things, whether after school, or during the school holidays. Sometimes online based like Ed Place, or otherwise using the world around us to learn.
With Ed Place, you log in as a parent and assign work to your children. The topics and work are clearly divided into areas such as maths and english, but also by age. The child then needs to complete those assignments, and you as the adult will be able to see how they get on. The clever thing is, that Ed Place then can recommend the next work to do based on how they did. You can also add incentives. Completion of topics and a trip to the local swimming pool or park for example. Also if you have a older child you can give them the ability to self assign work. You can of course turns this off, if it doesn’t suit you.
There are a group of qualified teachers working for Ed Place. The teachers are either reviewers, or authors of the assignments and content.
Ed Place says :
Our reviewers work for leading schools. They are responsible for ensuring our content is engaging and effective for children and up-to-date according to the Curriculum. They set tasks for our content authors who consist of a highly experienced team of teachers. The process of adding and updating our content is never ending as we strive to provide the best resources for parents.
The So far we have found the service and site excellent. We will be adding some more detail to this review towards the end of the summer, with our conclusions though.
