Todays guest post looks at Wedding cakes, my own was tiered and white, but with love hearts sweets all over it as I wanted something that meant something to us, and was different. How about yours?
Ask a hundred people to close their eyes and picture a wedding cake and most of them will see the same image: a white iced cake, 2-3 tiers, fruit or Madeira sponge, most probably with bride & groom figurines placed on the top.
The traditional wedding cake is understandably popular. White will almost certainly complement the wedding colour palette and can be easily decorated with iced flowers to match the wedding bouquet. The tiered structure never fails to look impressive and most guests will be more than happy with a fruit or Madeira filling.
But times are changing, the wedding cake is undergoing a bit of a renaissance. The modern bride and groom are more than keen for their cake makers to get seriously creative with the baking.
Inspired combination of flavour and design
The popularity of Bake Off and the growth of coffee shops on the high street has rejuvenated our love of cakes and we are always keen to try something new. A good wedding cake maker these days will offer much more than the traditional fruit cake or Madeira sponge. They will combine elegant wedding cake designs with luxurious and mouth-watering fillings. How about a wonderfully light and sensuous Red Velvet? A sophisticated Espresso? A moist creamy Madagascan vanilla? Or a zesty citrus or fruit flavour?
And these delicious cakes are topped off with more creative icing techniques and alternative toppings. An explosion of soft delicate white rosettes creates a beautifully romantic and luxurious effect, and laced icing techniques can really add that extra touch of elegance to the wedding banquet. Decorating the cake with beautifully-arranged fresh fruit can make a delicious, striking and not to mention, healthier alternative!
Go naked!
Sometimes it seems a shame to cover that beautifully-crafted cake with icing. Naked cakes are very ‘on-trend’ at the moment; simple, fuss-free designs with minimal toppings, some 100’s and 1000’s, a light dusting of sugar? A little fruit? A few scattered flowers?) allow the simple beauty of the cake to shine through.
Think cupcake
Luxurious wedding cupcakes can make a fun, elegant and practical alternative to a traditional wedding cake. They allow you to offer wedding guests a much wider variety of fillings (great for catering for guests with different allergies) and toppings can be easily co-ordinated with the wedding colour scheme. When stacked up on a tiered stand, these little cakes can really look stunning too, and guests will love lining up to choose their own individual favourite.
Say cheese
Taking the idea of cheesecake quite literally, why not swap (or compliment) a traditional sweet wedding cake, with a savoury cheesy one? A tiered stack of fine cheeses can look amazing with some carefully arranged flowers and / or fruit.
