In this post, the second in a series I am doing on wooden windows, I wanted to explore the changes you could make in your home, when you are doing a home makeover or improvements. Using some real life photographs from a house that used beautiful Wooden Window Alliance wooden windows in its refurbishment, so giving you a true indication of the impact your window choices can have.
So here is what the house looked like from the outside initially :
To give you an idea of the how the rooms looked from the inside, this is how the living room looked before :
I think you would agree it looks dark (even with those large windows) and very dated.
In choosing wood, or wood-based windows and doors will bring out the beauty and quality of your home. They have a very ‘real’ and tactile feel to them. Bespoke wood windows can be like a beautiful piece of furniture. You can see this quite plainly by comparing the image below with the first image. Rather than the dark wooden panelling that was a feature below the roof, they have added more glazing in a bespoke wooden window frame. Adding both an individual style to the property and so much additional light flooding into the home.
Wooden windows and doors can come in pretty much any colour or translucent stain, they can even be two colours. This kind of dual-coloured finish, gives you the home owner lots of options. You can opt for one colour on the outside and another (or even natural wood) on the inside. Wood windows can be simply re-decorated to suit your changing interior design schemes throughout the years. The redecoration is also part of the simple maintenance of them too, so these windows last for many years to come.
The style of the hardware is also something to think about, from the ultra-modern to classic solid brass, every style is catered for.
To the left of the image, you can see the kitchen window, with its grey painted window frames. From the kitchen however the frames are painted in a pale sage green to compliment the decor. Its important to remeber that, wood windows can be decorated and re-decorated to suit your changing design scheme.
Don’t think of wooden windows as being something that you always find in a period property, they look amazing in both. They are classic, modern, durable, sustainable, cost-effective, efficient and beautiful alternative to PVC-U.
This post was brought to you in association with the Wood Window Alliance.

These windows look gorgeous! I love them, much nicer than your typical white PVC-U ones or the old fashioned dark wooden ones.

Ha! We are on our way to a lovely little Sykes Cottage in Wales and do you know one of my favourite things about that property? Wooden windows in that lovely ‘National Trusty’ colour. If I lived in an period property rather than a modern home I would be longing for lovely wooden windows.

Wow, these are so lovely. We are just in the process of changing our windows and doors and its hard not to get drawn in to the cheaper cost of pvc etc. There’s nothing like stylish wood, these are just fab – great post!

Amanda, how right you are. Beautifully designed and manufactured wooden windows, especially those by Mumford & Wood, are comparable to a beautiful piece of furniture.
Mumford & Wood mostly use sustainably sourced Siberian Larch, a slow growing and very dense species, which is engineered for maximum strength and stability. It is the quality of this timber, from trees that are harvested at 80–90 years of age that lend itself to high quality joinery.
Interestingly you mention the word ‘tactile’. I’ve watched guests in our own home actually touch and stroke my Mumford & Wood frames which always brings a smile to their faces (when they think I’m not looking, that is). I have compared the quality of the wooden windows in our next property and there is no comparison – difficult to open sash windows, impossible to lift, and when one can manage it they spitefully crash down as though our hands are on a gallows. Hmm, time for a change we think!
