So last weekend was going to be 48 hours of the tall fella and myself spending some time together, away from the stresses and strains of work, and humdrum of reality. Sometimes you just need to get away don’t you? We wanted to relax, catch up on some sleep and have fun together in another city away from home. We booked a hotel in Oxford (Hawkwell House) which looked modern, quiet but close to the bustle of the city if we needed it.
So what do you look for in a hotel? Location, a spa, price or how luxurious it is? I don’t know if it’s because I write so much about interiors, or just because my sleep is so darn important to me, but the actual bed is a bit of a deal breaker for me. A super king size or queen size bed is ideal, my husband is nearly 6 ft 6 and I’m quite tall too, so its a genuine need. We have a king size mattress that’s memory foam at home, and its revolutionised my husband and indeed my quality of sleep. So if a hotel has a memory foam mattress, and memory foam pillows then I’m booking that hotel straight away, pass me the credit card!
Hawkwell House : Tempur Mattress
If you haven’t ever tried a memory foam mattress before, then it really does feel different to standard sprung mattress, it moulds to your shape and feels much more dense underneath you. It feels very supportive too, and I think that’s what has helped with my achy back each morning.
Our room wasn’t ready, as we’d arrived a little early, so we wandered along the river Thames into Oxford, stopping off at a couple of pubs along the way. One of the pubs was so cool, it was as if it had been resurrected just before being condemned. With old bare plaster walls, a till which was a handmade wooden box and old barrels with real ale being dispensed to the punters at a rapid rate.
It was a fab walk along the riverside. There’s something about just wandering aimlessly, not knowing an area but not being in a rush to get anywhere, it feels freeing. What should have only took us around 30 minutes took far longer as we stopped off for a few drinks and admired the view. So many boats were out on the water, and we watched and giggled at a guy taking his girlfriend out on a romantic punt, and getting himself into all sorts of trouble. I’m still amazed they both didn’t end up in the water.
Once we got into Oxford, we wandered around the streets, and tried to get ourselves acquainted with city, had a long leisurely lunch and then headed back to the hotel. I did have a bit of a nap I must admit. I only rested my eyes for a few minutes *ahem* I told you those memory foam mattresses were good!
I still can’t believe I fell asleep, must have been all of that walking hey. We round off the day by getting dressed up to the nines, and having a night out in Iffley village. Log fires, G&T’s and a packet of mini cheddars, my husband knows how to treat a girl, it was bliss!
The hotel, Oxford and the mattress didn’t disappoint on our weekend break. We awoke ready to take on the day again, after a great nights sleep. Until next time Oxford!

Glad you had a lovely time! Certainly does look like a beautiful city. – I’ll add it too my bucket list!!!
We have recently ‘invested’ in a new bed and Tempur mattress! After years of suffering, it had to be done and I have to say I have no regrets!
I long to go back to my little bit of heaven, and even sneak a few minutes reading with a cuppa!
Should have done it years ago! X
