A conservatory is something many people lust after, it’s a fantastic way of having extra living space, and taking advantage of a really cost-effective way of creating an additional and versatile room in your home.
Having a conservatory has two major problems, and as someone who has one, I know these only too well. First of all its the glare and the second is the temperature. You can of course decorate a room in warm or cold colours to help influence how it feels, but conservatories can feel incredibly cold in the winter and really hot (scorcio!) in the summer, so much so that purely decoration such as colour scheme and floor coverings aren’t going to make a huge impact.
However both of these problem can be easily solved making a conservatory into an all year round room, with the help of Thomas Sanderson‘s blinds and I wanted to show you a few gorgeous and great quality products that they offer to do just this.
Conservatory Roof Blinds
Research has shown that the roof of a conservatory is where the majority of heat build up and glare occurs, particularly in south-facing conservatories, plus it’s also where most of the heat escapes during the winter months. So special consideration should be made to choosing the correct conservatory roof blinds for combating this problem. Because conservatory roofs are notoriously awkward shapes and sizes, getting the experts in makes complete sense to create the perfect look.
These come in two options :
Pleated conservatory blinds with SolarTex fabrics which help to reflect the sun’s rays from the glass – ensuring your conservatory stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Duette® EnergySmart Conservatory blinds are similar in appearance to classic pleated blinds, but on closer inspection reveal some clever design features. Rather than just one layer of fabric, they provide a double-layered cellular functional solution, and the are particularly effective at sound reduction.
Duette® blinds
I think these are my favourite and indeed the most popular of all of Thomas Sandersons conservatory blinds. Not only are Duette® blinds very effective at keeping conservatories at a constant temperature throughout the year, they also really soften the look of the room, adding, colour, comfort and style. I love the evening look of a conservatory with Duette® blinds, once closed they completely change the feel of the room.
They help keep the room looking cosy and warm. Suitable to use on the roof and on the windows as I mentioned, so a great all round product. Do you know what else? The can be even be powered (Thomas Sanderson’s Platinum Power System ) by light, a remote control or on a timer, so giving you complete control.
They are the original honeycomb blinds with a special coating on the window side of the blinds that increase their energy efficiency. Even blocking out up to 45% of unwelcome noise from outside, adding to that feeling of the room being your haven.
Independent tests have shown that they can reflect up to 78% of the sun’s warmth, retain heat by up to 46% and save on energy bills by around 25%. They also block up to 99% of UV rays, which helps to protect furniture and wallpaper from fading, keeping them looking newer for longer.
Aluminium slatted blinds
These are the choice I made, when I had blinds for my conservatory. They are incredibly slim and really do give you, I think, maximum control over light, shade and heat at your windows. I went for a metallic pale gold which is bang on trend this season. What I love about metal venetian window blinds is even when the blinds are down I can open the slats to let in light and the view, but still have a level of privacy if needed. I would recommend combining them with either Thomas Sanderson pleated or duette® roof blinds which will maximise taking the heat our of your conservatory this summer.
So have I given you some inspiration on how to create a cool look and feel in the summer months in your conservatory?

This is really informative! When I had a conservatory it used to drive me mad that it was so hot all the time… I needed some of these brilliant blinds.

I would love a conservatory so much! I can imagine they do get really hot though, although I’m so cold all the time at the moment that I quite fancy sitting in a baking hot room! I bet on a hot day it’s awful though x

I’ve been looking quite a bit at conservatories lately – it has become a bit of a fantasy! I love the idea of being sat in the quiet, surrounded by plants.

Some really good suggestions here. I actually work as a conservatory converter in Scotland and because the climate is so erratic up here, the hot in summer and cold in winter problem is massive for us and we really need to think about how we build our conservatories.
To get around this my company use double sided foiled insulation, in winter this helps to stop heat loss but in summer it helps to deflect heat. Works really well!
