Are you already making home improvement plans for the new year? I know many people use this time to renew things in their home, or to sit down and make larger home improvement plans. This time last year I was planning my own garden room project. How about an indoor outdoor space? It’s been something of a buzz word in interiors for a few years now. It’s not an easy thing to recreate though, and requires careful planning. They can look absolutely stunning thought, so well worth the time and effort. Here are my top tips to creating indoor outdoor space in the UK, but first :
What is indoor/outdoor space?
There are many variations but, to put it simply, it is a graduation of indoor space into outdoor space. There are many ways you can achieve this including roof overhangs, wall-to-wall floor-to-ceiling glass or bi-folding or sliding patio doors from companies such as Quickslide, walkways, courtyards and light wells. Removing barriers between the home and the garden, can not only make your home feel larger, but can actually make you use more of the space that you have.

How to get indoor outdoor space in your home?
If like me you don’t have a large garden, it doesn’t mean this is something you can’t do. In fact a courtyard garden can be used really effectively for this kind of look.

- One very important factor you should consider, is to repeat flooring and/or other building materials in both spaces. So that you are visually blurring the boundaries and drawing the eye outside.
- Remember to include a dining table and comfortable seating which will give your indoor/outdoor space multi-purpose.
- Do you have a blank wall? How about using a projector to either play movies in the garden or show photographs.
- Not much space? Opt for furniture that can be used in different ways. Stools can also be side tables, stacking or folding chairs are a good idea too.
- My current obsession is plants. For these spaces, you really can go crazy with the greenery. Plants give the feeling of being outdoors in covered spaces, but they also add life and colour. Potted plants and vertical gardens are great space-saving options, but if it’s a lush green look you’re after opt for plants with heavy foliage.
- Don’t forget lighting. Try solar lanterns, candles and fairy lights.
- Soften the look with outdoor cushions and outdoor rugs.
