Is your bathroom depressed? Faded towels? Cluttered bottles? Dirty grout? If so, it’s time to help out with some simple ideas to refresh the space. Most are quick, easy and cheap. So, roll up your sleeves and give your bathroom the TLC it deserves.
- Give it a good clean
Initially, a really good scrub will bring some sparkle back to the room. It will also give you a chance to identify any repair work needed, particularly where grouting is concerned.
- Freshen up the paintwork
One of the quickest ways to refresh your bathroom is to give it a lick of paint. A change in colour can also help to revive the room. The trend is for neutrals, with accent colours for towels and accessories.
- Regrout the tiles
Dirty, grungy, eroding grout can make the most glamorous bathroom look awful. So it’s worth spending time cleaning and resealing any grout in your bathroom. It can be achieved cheaply if you’re prepared to give it a go yourself. Here’s a short video to show you how.
- Paint the tiles
Replacing tiles can be a costly affair, but if you dislike your bathroom tiles you could try painting them. You will need an oil-based primer and a specialist paint to do this.
- Update the suite
This may sound drastic but as long as you don’t change the layout of your bathroom, a new suite can be the best way to update the room. New suites can be found at great value for money prices and as long as you’re replacing like for like, the cost of the labour need not be too high.
- Change the taps
Changing taps can really help to update the look and feel of your bathroom. There are many showrooms where you can buy bathroom taps at great discount prices. It’s a simple job for a plumber and is a cost effective way of getting a more contemporary style.
- Change the flooring
Vinyl flooring is warm underfoot, comes in a vast variety of styles, is easy to clean and can be fitted by a competent DIYer. A new floor is an excellent way to revitalise the room.
- Increase the lighting options
Do you have enough lighting option in the bathroom? Ideally you need a combination of task, ambient and accent lighting for both style and functionality.
- Replace blinds
If your blinds are looking tatty, replace them with new ones to add colour and texture. Alternatively, shutters are growing in popularity and can completely change the look of a room. They bring a clean minimal style to the bathroom and can help to make it seem larger.
- Hang some wallpaper
Pick one wall and add some feature wallpaper. If the space is small, splash out on a luxury brand as you won’t need much. It can be a quick and easy way to change the whole complexion of the space.
- Increase storage space
The bathroom is a busy room which often fills with clutter. Increasing the amount of storage available with extra shelving, ledges, cupboards and cabinets can help to restore order and calm. If you have any old furniture you could paint and repurpose as storage, give it a new home in the bathroom.
- Add a new mirror
Adding a new or larger mirror is a great way to inject more light into a room and create the impression of space. If space is at a premium, a mirrored cabinet will also offer extra storage.
- Choose a new shower curtain
A shower curtain is often an early victim of wear and tear. Easily replaced, a new shower curtain in a great design, or complementary colour, is a budget option for helping to spruce up the space.
- Add some accessories
Candles and upgraded toiletries all have the capacity to transform your bathroom into a spa-like relaxation zone.
- Add a plant
Most plants will thrive in a bathroom environment. Choose a statement plant for some tropical luxury.
- Add some art
A simple trick to enliven the walls is to add some art or framed photographs. Using Velcro wall stickers will not damage the walls, there will be no need to drill and you can change the arrangement as and when it suits.
