Do you have a guest bedroom? I think it’s very easy to let a guest bedroom become a little bit of a dumping ground in your house. It’s a valuable part of the home that often gets neglected. To get the most out of a room that doesn’t get used all of the time, it should be a multifunctional space. So, if you have a guest room, I wanted to give you some hints and tips on preparing a guest bedroom to function in the best way possible for your family needs.
Decluttering
Step back and look at your space. Look at the room with fresh eyes, what works and what could be improved? Day-to-day you might use your spare room to store last season’s clothes, as an improvised office space, or even where you keep the huge collection of shoes you own – or is that just me? You need to rationalise the contents.
Instead, you can use existing storage containers or go to the high street to buy them. Spend a couple of hours clearing out surplus to requirements clutter and store it away, donate or sell it. Any proceeds can be used for anything you might be missing in the room. Whilst doing this, you need to make sure there is enough drawer or hanging space for guest’s clothes too.
The Bed
The bed and the way you dress it makes such a difference. Anyone who knows me and my addiction to bedding will know that I am a big believer in fresh bedding transforming the look and feel of a bedroom. Freshening up the guest bedroom is also the perfect opportunity to treat the room to new pillows and a duvet, or to get them laundered. I love crisp white bedding and adding colourful accessories if you feel the design of the room warrants it.
If you are struggling for space, it is worth looking into divan beds in the UK that offer excellent storage. Unlike regular bed frames, divans can be built with drawers at the foot of the bed, on one side or both sides. Some even have ottoman bases, so the mattress flips up to reveal storage underneath.
We are very short on space but needed the option of a double bed so purchased a single bed with a pull-out trundle that can be stored underneath when not in use – giving you space and flexibility all year round.
The Finishing Touches

Those small touches will really make your guests feel welcome.
- I would suggest water by the bed.
- A posy of flowers.
- Fresh towels.
- I also make up a pack of toiletries for guests to use. It looks so thoughtful but it’s normally samples I’ve collected, making it extremely affordable.
- A night-light or bedside light is paramount. It can be difficult for people to find their way in an unfamiliar house.
- A spare socket for your guest to charge their phone.
- All our bedrooms have blackout blinds, and I can’t recommend them enough for a guest space, the last thing you want is for them to have been woken up early because of the light.
So, these are my suggestions for preparing a guest bedroom. Do you think there’s anything I’ve missed?
