Like just about everyone, I can’t wait to get back travelling once it’s safe. I don’t think I’ll ever again take for granted the freedoms and accessibility we all had until early last year. When that time comes, I’ve promised myself to see more of what’s on my doorstep. Well, not my doorstep literally, but in this green and pleasant land of ours.
A great, varied Britain
You don’t have to go very far in Britain to come across something of beauty, or architectural or historic interest. And just about every large town and city has its vibrant or cultural pockets and a nightlife just about unimaginable in the 1970s.
Central London’s historic buildings and monuments are just a short boat trip along the Thames from historic Greenwich. There are some great places to stay in London. The New Forest in Hampshire, with its wild ponies roaming free, is a delight – with the Isle of Wight only a short ferry journey away. Just a few miles out of cities like Bath or Nottingham we have some of the most beautiful countryside in Europe with green rolling hills and expansive country houses on the horizon.
Manchester is a lively place these days. There’s a great art gallery and people rave about the National Football Museum. Both are just a short walk from Piccadilly Station or the city centre. And it’s not much of a drive out of Manchester to get to the beautiful Peak District or Lake District. There’s no shortage of funky hotels and apartments in Manchester. The Gay Village is full of happening bars and nightclubs.
Nostalgia trips
As well as visiting London, Manchester, and the Lake District once it’s safe to travel again I’m also looking forward to a nostalgic seaside visit or two. Skegness evokes fond childhood memories, and the bright lights of Blackpool’s Golden Mile are winking at me from a distance, beckoning me back.
Be careful and follow the guidelines
Covid-19 has impacted every aspect of lives in the last year. The unpredictable nature of it and the new strains mean we all need to be vigilant. Guidelines around travel as well as working, meeting people and other activities are liable to change at short notice. Be careful, stay safe and keep up-to-date with the current official advice.
Not taking things for granted!
One thing Covid has taught us all is that it’s easy to take things for granted. No longer! Meeting with family and friends, a meal out or just a couple of hours’ shopping on a Saturday afternoon with my daughters are all things I’m looking forward to again alongside the joy of travel.
