The world of work changed…
…literally overnight, early in 2020. What many of us thought would be a short-term thing is proving otherwise. Remote working, hybrid working – whatever you want to call it – is here to stay. For office-based workers the pandemic kick-started a big cultural working shift.
What’s become apparent is that many people want to continue working from home – from a day or two a week to full-time –permanently.
The implications are massive. Varied and flexible working hours, less commuting time, reduced office costs, reduced social interaction, less ‘water cooler’ chat (and occasional revelations). And of course, the need for a decent home office set-up.
Home office set-ups
Back in early 2020 the ends of dining tables were commandeered as ‘desk space’, laptops sat on a million or more laps throughout the day, people worked in bed, and I know at least one person who used an ironing board as a temporary desk!
If we’re serious about working largely from home for the restof our careers, we need to think about our home office set-ups.
There’s a lot to consider – available space, cost, aesthetics, practicalities, comfort and safety. If you’re going to spend upwards of 30 hours a week in your home office for the next 20 or more years, it needs to be comfortable, fit-for-purpose.You need to start with two things – a decent chair and desk.
Upgrade time
I recently decided to upgrade both. I looked at desks first and settled on a Flexispot Standing Desk. I’d been thinking about a standing desk and have used one at a friend’s office. They’re great.
It’s flexible (I don’t mean bendy!) and practical. It comes in different desktop sizes ranging from 50cm to 80cm deep by100cm to 160cm wide. I chose a the smaller desktop, in white to suit my office area. If you need to stack a printer, other office equipment or something quite heavy, it will safely hold up to 125kg. I mix it up in terms of sitting and standing – which is good because this desk is adjustable and ranges in height from 58cm to 123cm. You can electronically pre-set up to threeselected desk heights.
Other considerations…
I’m a bit fussy about office furniture in the home, so the different desktop colour options were a relief. I went for white, but there are about ten to choose from. Something that I really like is the cable management system. There’s a large groove where you can tidy away all the cables. It works for my aesthetic eye but more importantly it’s a good safety feature – no loose cables to cause any harm.
What next?
I’m really pleased with my new desk; it ticked all the boxes on my list. It’s practical, flexible and gets a thumbs-up for aesthetics. It’s better for my posture and health as well. I’ll share some real life images of it once I’ve tweaked the office a little more as I’m still moving things around. Now to start looking for that chair to go with it…
