We have loved joining in with various World Book Days, with The Lion, the Witch and the Warbrobe and Katniss Everdeen from the Hunger Games being two of our favourites. If your child’s school takes part in World Book Character day, you’ll want to find the perfect costume for your little one to celebrate the love of reading. Book character day at school allows kids to use their imaginations to become a part of the books that they love so much, but it can also be an undue cause of stress if you are presented with this dress-up challenge with very little notice! Be prepared this year by considering the following costume ideas.
Peter Rabbit
Beatrix Potter books are filled with intriguing characters, and a Peter Rabbit costume is a fun and relatively easy one. Pair a blue waistcoat or blazer with brown slippers, rabbit ears, and drawn-on whiskers and you’re there! Add a carrot to complete the look.
The Cat in the Hat
The Cat in the Hat is one of the most popular characters to dress up as for Halloween as well as book character day, so you may be able to wear this costume more than once. You can buy the full costume; or just get the red and white striped hat and pair it with a black and white suit from home.
Angelina Ballerina
This prim and proper little mouse wants to be a prima ballerina someday, and she is a beloved character for many little girls. You can find a basic ballerina costume at Funidelia.co.uk, and then draw on mouse whiskers for an easy take on the little dancing mouse.
Alice in Wonderland
What would a book character day be without characters from one of the world’s most iconic children’s books? There’s a wealth of options in this book, from the title character to the Mad Hatter, Queen of Hearts, or Cheshire Cat with his goofy grin. You’ll find online tutorials to make any of these costumes, and ready-made options are available in any costume shop.
Assorted Superheroes
Although book character day is supposed to celebrate more traditional tomes, you’ll see a good number of students turning up in a black Spiderman costume or as the Incredible Hulk. If your child is a comic book fanatic, you could choose one of these various superhero costumes to get into the spirit of the day without guilt! After all, they’re still reading.
Willie Wonka
Characters from Roald Dahl books are a good choice for book character day, because you also have Roald Dahl Day to contend with in September. More and more schools are encouraging dressing up on this day as well, so if you get a fabulous costume for a Road Dahl character it can do double duty. Willie Wonka is a firm favourite. Dress your child up as the eccentric chocolate maker with a tall top hat, cane, and golden ticket. Other popular Dahl characters include Matilda, the Witches, or James and the Giant Peach.
These are just a few top ideas to help you get the ball rolling when you start talking about book character day with your little ones. It’s a good excuse to share your own favourite books that have stayed with you throughout the years!
