Everyone has different opinions on what makes a truly happy home. There are the obvious ones, such as making each other laugh, being open and honest with each other, and cooking a great Sunday lunch, but what else makes everything that little bit better?
Here are my five secrets to a happy family home.
1. Location
After a hard day at work and school, it’s important that you and the children come back to a place you are proud to call home. Little things can make a huge difference and the distance you have to travel should always be factored in; as should the surroundings you’ll pass on your journey.
Whether you love the convenience of having a big supermarket just a 10 minute walk from your house or want friends or family just round the corner, you’re sure to find your dream location. Remember to consider all of your options when reviewing locations – consider existing properties and new build homes in Chelmsford or any other area that might fit the bill.
2. Entertainment
The living room or kitchen is a great place to bring people into your family home. Having this centralised zone where everybody feels welcome is extremely important. This is an area where you can hear what your kids have been up to at school, help make dinner together or simply enjoy your favourite show together.
3. Privacy
A child’s bedroom should be their sanctuary. Making the bedroom somewhere they feel safe and inspired is important to their wellbeing. Let them help out with decorating, fill it with educational resources and games and if you want to treat them, give them access to a games console.
4. Quiet
Living on a main road in a block of flats is fine when you’re single but starting a family means very little peace and quiet though, so it’s important to make sure you have put certain precautions in place. Sound proofed windows, a quiet street and locks on your bedroom door are a great start.
5. Democracy
A home where everybody has a say in decisions most definitely makes a happy home. Involve everyone in the decision making of the house – from painting the walls to buying a new sofa; it should be a fun experience for all.
