As the mother of a teen, I think I am probably well placed to say that, yes her language is very different to mine. With words such as ‘Peng’ and ‘Boots’ being just two I have had to navigate recently. As I sit here writing this, I remember vividly, that as a teen in the mid to late 1980’s my language was too very different to my mums too. I really am showing my age when I say words and phrases such as care bear stare, barf, wicked, brill, radical and take a chill pill were words and phrases I regularly used. Some of those words during that time though, have now worked their way into modern language. Well I still do say (much to my daughters embarrassment) wicked and freak out on a regular basis!
I thought it might be useful to give you 5 words, and their meanings, that you need in your life to be down with the kids *ahem* in 2016, so here goes :
COVIDIOT: an update all the way from 2021! Your mum wants over-50s life insurance? Sensible, but the Post Office is online now. Strolling into town makes her, yes, you guessed it: a covidiot!
SAVAGE – Hardcore or badass.
So you know that you watched the whole new Netflix series of OITNB in one sitting? Well that makes you…savage!
WOKE – Being aware of current events
‘Come on, we all need to know about the EU referendum. Be woke my friend!’
FAM – your family
Last year was all about your squad (your group of friends) this year its all about the fam that you have!
SNATCHED – The new on-fleek, amazing or great.
Anything from your outfit, or the latest amazing Beyonce video…which was so snatched!
BOOTS – Very?
If you want to add emphasis to something, then you add boots to the end of the sentence. I think there are a few variations to this one, but boots is my favourite.
Still feeling confused?
Don’t dispair, how about trying this really fun quiz, so you can work out what what decade your language is. It only take a couple of minutes to get an instant result. I don’t mean to brag, butI’m in my 20’s… #justsayin

That’s hilarious! I’m definitely not down with the kids (though I did get language age teens in the quiz: “You have hella fleek language” haha).
“Savage” is a real Irish/Dublin one, glad to hear it being used more, another Irish one is “Deadly” which I love. You didn’t say what “Peng” means? I need enlightening 🙂

Every ‘civilization’ have it’s own language. This is my answer. My kids live by blog, tweet, pin and so on. Sometimes I wonder what was wrong with my school.
