Last week, I gave you some ideas on capsule packing for a holiday at Walt Disney World, Florida, in this next post I wanted to give a little guidence on creating a summer capsule wardrobe
The idea of a capsule wardrobe has actually created a lot of buzz in the fashion blogging world. From debate about the correct way to assemble one, to how many pieces it should have, and to how often new items should be added to the collection, there have been plenty of differing opinions. However, I believe that there are no hard and fast rules, only guidelines, for creating the perfect capsule wardrobe for you.
I’ll be offering suggestions below on how to create a capsule wardrobe with the basics that will work for summer. This means that on those busy mornings, whether you’re taking care of kiddos or getting ready for work, you’ll always have something to wear, because each item will look good paired with everything else in the collection. And because all wardrobes are very personal, I’m going to get you started with just the basics, thereby allowing you to add the finishing touches that will make the collection truly tailored to your wants and needs.
Tank Top
This is a key piece that can be worn under everything from sheer tees to your blazer. Choose nude, white, or black for a classic look, or because it’s summer, opt for a vibrant colour and keep all of your other pieces neutral.
Plain Tee
Tuck this wardrobe necessity into trousers, skirts, and jeans, or wear it layered with sweaters, tanks, and button-up tops. Like the tank, choose neutral or colourful, depending on your taste.
Cardigan
A light outer layer is always welcome, even in the summer. Choose a long, billowy cardigan to add to your collection.
Button Up
A work-to-weekend essential, this piece will look great with trousers, skirts, and your favourite skinny jeans. Dress it up with a statement necklace and a stylish belt.
Blazer
The ideal capsule wardrobe just wouldn’t be complete without a classic jacket. In this instance, I’ve chosen a blazer for its versatility. Wear it on the weekend with shorts, or to the office with trousers.
Skinny Jeans
A great fitting pair of skinny jeans is the ultimate in wardrobe staples. Even through the summer, this is an easy and flattering piece to throw on.
Trousers
Essential for work or for play, choosing a trouser with a modern cut will look timeless and awesome with your other capsule wardrobe pieces.
Shorts
A nice, tailored pair of shorts with at least a three-inch inseam is what I have in mind here. Conservative enough to wear around the in-laws, but cool enough for warm weather, a classy pair of shorts is a must for a summer capsule wardrobe.
Skirt
Whether you choose A-line, skater, or pencil, a skirt is an excellent essential. Tuck in your tank or tee and pair with your blazer for work. Later, add a statement necklace and a clutch to create the perfect day-to-night look.
Dress
A little black dress should probably be in every woman’s closet. Choose something that has a higher neckline and hem that hits just above the knee, this way it’s conservative enough for a variety of occasions.
Once you have these ten basics for your summer capsule wardrobe, be sure to add a few more seasonal pieces with colour and pattern in addition to some universal accessories, shoes, and handbags. As long as what you choose continues to save you resources and time, then you’re on the right track to creating a collection that fits your needs.
Now all that remains, is to get shopping!

Great advice..But I don’t see my cropped/capri jeans (my summer uniform)…I think I need a prescription for a capsule wardrobe myself. I think I need my daughter to take me out and give me some fashion advice…But I will not be wearing shorts as short as hers! Nooo Way!
