There are lots of fun and colourful ways to be in style this spring/summer season with the embroidery trend still going strong, the return of gingham and a move from long tassels to tiny tassel or pompom edging. Mix a few of these key pieces with some staple items, including your favourite holiday dresses, and you can build a capsule wardrobe to mix and match between pieces all summer long.
Work that combo
The key to building a capsule wardrobe is sticking with a few colours, but that doesn’t mean they have to be muted, especially not in summertime. In my selection I’ve gone with red, blue and yellow, with undertones of white and navy so it feels a little nautical but with a difference.
I took a lot of inspiration from the Sainsbury’s holiday collection in this collage, but to make your own summer combos you’ll need a few tops and bottoms, at least one pair of sandals, a bag and a cover up or light coat. I chose the yellow cotton hooded jacket as it’s super-cute and you never know when there’s going to be a downpour in British summertime.
Standout pieces
Every capsule wardrobe should have some standout pieces and, depending on your mood and the occasion, you can put them together or with something plain to pare the look down. I love the white embroidered print coordinates with a really cute tropical holiday print that you can wear together. Or if you prefer, put the tie-front top with the navy culottes and the shorts with the white pompom tee – donning a trend that I love right now.
Tassels and pompoms
Making an otherwise plain item something special, the pompoms and tassels that are rocking the fashion world are sure to last through summer. Be they big or small, bright or monotone, pompoms and tassels can adorn pretty much anything from the side of a bag to the edge of a top or with a tassel on the back of your flip flops. If you don’t think they’re classy enough, this selection of pompom embellished items might change your mind.
Other items to add
Using my capsule above as a base, there are a few other items I’d definitely switch in. Everything seems to be going pastel right now, and that includes breton stripes and the new season version of gingham. Proving that no girl should be without a gingham top this summer, Reese Witherspoon wears this pale blue number in style.
Wear with some cropped trousers like Reese, or pair your gingham top with the fun embroidered print shorts above for a bright and breezy look. New Look are doing some really on-trend gingham styles at the moment.
For those days when all you want to do is throw on a light summer dress and some sandals, you can still switch it up with just a few fun and colourful accessories. Florals are another classic choice that will never go out of style and can be recycled season after season.
