Life is full of all manner of wondrous and amazing things; from awe-inspiring views, man-made spectaculars to the birth of new life, there are undeniably brilliant things in this world. Equally, there are also some things that, whilst being a necessity, don’t exactly get the blood pumping quite like some of life’s finer aspects.
Some examples of this include the weekly shop, chores around the home and, everyone’s least favourite part of adulthood, paying the bills. Yes, life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, sometimes you have just got to grin and bear it. You have to take the rough with the smooth because without any downs you wouldn’t have any ups.
So this is our little celebration of all of life’s tedious tasks that we may not look forward to, but ultimately allow to enjoy ourselves, even if it doesn’t quite feel that way at the time.
The Weekly Shop
Ah, yes, the weekly shop. We all remember (im)patiently waiting at home for mum and dad to stock up the fridge and cupboard with delicious goodies. The day or two before shopping day was always a struggle, practically living on scraps and we will never forget the heartbreak as you opened the fridge door for the umpteenth time and food hadn’t magically appeared. The pain was very, very real.
Now that we have all grown up and are responsible for replenishing our own kitchens, we understand that we simply cannot afford to buy food every day and have to make things last. You would think that the prospect of buying food would be exciting, but who actually looks forward to fighting through hordes of other shoppers, all vying for the same items as you? That’s probably why internet shopping has become so popular.
While we may not look forward to it, the weekly shop is a necessity and, without it, we would be left very, very hungry. That or very poor and unhealthy from lively solely on takeaways.
Looking After the Home
Who wants to come home to a filthy home? Even worse, who wants to welcome guests into their living space when you could easily mistake it for a dosshouse? Absolutely no one, so while hoovering up and down the house probably isn’t your idea of a fun Saturday afternoon, when you are done you can finish and be proud of the home in which you live.
It isn’t just for vanity reasons why we have to look after our homes because, as we know, a dirty home is an unhealthy one. Without the proper care and maintenance, you may find yourself in a situation where you require expensive work or, worse, having to move out completely. Common issues through a lack of love and care include persistent damp problems, primarily caused by a lack of ventilation in the home. Some ways to combat this issue include remembering to open windows, seeking the help of damp proofing specialists (who can assist with preventative action such as basement tanking) and regularly checking for signs of rot on structural beams.
Paying Bills
This is the big one. As soon as money goes into one hand it can feel like it is going out of the other…that is the epitome of being an adult! As a kid, our biggest financial problem was deciding whether to spend our pocket money on an ice cream or save it in order to afford something more extravagant.
How time’s change, but bills are one of those dastardly necessities that we don’t like doing, but ultimately serve us well in the long run. If you don’t pay your bills, you are left without water, energy or even a home altogether.
That is the end of our little celebration of all those things we don’t like doing, but would be worse off if we didn’t. What’s the one thing you hate having to do?

Bills are definitely top of my list of annoying chores!
Getting up on a morning is also something I’d rather not do sometimes 😉
