This year, one of my mini goals is to spend more time with my adult friends and family. Simply having fun together. Often this can be really tricky as we all live in different areas of the country (and some even further afield) so I’ve made a plan of attack by planning a day in Birmingham, and because it’s a central area of the country, I think we’ll all find it easy to get there.
Another reason I chose Birmingham, is it’s got such a great train links and a nearby airport for those traveling from abroad. If you manage to squeeze in any shopping whilst you are there, there’s also no need to worry about where to store your bags, as there’s a service at Excess Baggage to store your luggage at Birmingham New Street.
Ok, so what’s on offer :
Peaky Blinders Tour
We are more than a little obsessed with the TV show Peaky Blinders. Even if you don’t watch the programme and love it, its always good to find out about the history of a place you are visiting. The Peaky Blinders Tour meets at The Old Crown pub, you can have a drink whilst the guide brings to life the real gangs that terrorised the racecourses of England in the 1920s and the real gang leaders. It’s then that the walking tour begins taking around 45 mins to an hour. Then its back to the Old Crown, where you can enjoy a drink and a typical Victorian dinner. Wouldn’t it be cool if the men in your group wore flat caps? Might even be tempted to wear one myself.
COOKING – LOAF
Sometimes learning a new skill collectively with a bunch of friends, can be such a fun thing to do. I recently learnt how to make gin with friends…I mean what’s not to love? Well how about taking a cookery course, at Birmingham’s Loaf. From bread and pasta to cooking a Thaali (my personal favourite) and knife skills.
We believe everyone has the right to be able to find, cook, and eat real food everyday. We’ve developed courses that enable you to do just that. Whether it’s learning how to make artisan sourdough bread, how to butcher your own meat, or how to find safe wild food for free, Loaf’s in-house staff and expert external tutors will guide you through every step of the process. You will leave our courses feeling confident that you can start reproducing the magic at home in your own kitchen. No experience necessary!
MUSIC
Birmingham has many music venues. Some of the best in the area in my opinion. Some upcoming events that I noticed was Kaiser Cheifs, Manic Street Preachers and Elles Bailey.
We recently went to the O2 Academy to see Lily Allen, and this venue is really cool. Steeped in history I was impressed with how intimate it felt and the sound quality too. If it’s a band or artist you really want to see, I think you really do get a buzz from really seeing the whites of the eyes of the person performing. You can do just that here. What better way to end a trip together with a bunch of friends than to experience music that you feel passionate about. Have a dance, and share a drink together.
I’ve just mentioned three here, but there really is an abundance of things to do in Birmingham, brilliant restaurants nd fantastic shopping and areas to discover.
