In this post, I am going to be covering car tyres care, something anyone with a car needs to know. Tyres are one of the most important parts of a car or any vehicle with them. Good tyre care is essential for safety comfort and reliability.
This is from a few years ago but had to include it. Miss A washing the car at the weekend, one of her favourite jobs.
The tyre tread area making contact with the road is relatively small, but that small area if worn or damaged can greatly affect the car’s safety. Take the time to look at your tyres this evening, it’s honestly a job you should delay. If your tyres are worn or damaged it can seriously affect your car’s safety and handling. Also importantly if they don’t meet legal requirements, you could face a fine and 3 penalty points on your licence. The fine can be up to £2,500 per tire!
The Details
Tread depth must be above the legal minimum of 1.6mm throughout a continuous strip in the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire tyre circumference. Many organisations also support the 3mm campaign which recommends motorists replace their tyres when the tread reaches 3mm. The reason for this is that driving in the wet and at speed, a tread of at least 3mm will be safer.
Inflation is also important. Tyres must be correctly inflated according to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations in the vehicle handbook. Something I know we have done wrong before and paid the price. Why? Well, over-inflated tyres cause more wear and so shortening the life of the tyre. Under-inflated tyres increase the amount of fuel you use, plus the tread shoulders can damage.
You should inspect your tyres at least every month. Make sure you do it regularly and set a date in your diary. Look not only at the tread but the general condition of your tyres. Look for bulges, bumps and cuts and anything that doesn’t look ‘right’.
