- Put in security lights. Lighting at the front and back of your house is one of the easiest ways to put off would-be burglars. If a light, like Lepro LED security lights, comes on as they approach, they’re less likely to risk being seen. Keeping the entryway to your home well lit is also safer for you. You’ll be greeted home with a light, so you won’t trip on the front step in the dark.
- Set the alarm. One of the best ways to protect your home is to install an alarm system. This is a simple way to keep your home secure and may also reduce the cost of your home insurance every month. However, lots of people quickly get lax about actually setting your alarm. If it’s not set, it won’t protect you and may even invalidate your home insurance. Always set the alarm when you leave the house and before the last person goes to bed at night. If you find you often forget, leave a note by the door to remind you to set the alarm before you leave.
- Change the locks. Stronger locks can be another way to reduce your home insurance costs and make your home more secure. This is because some locks are better at keeping out intruders. Locks that have been around for a while aren’t as safe, as burglars will know them, and have methods of getting past them. A modern lock, fitted professionally will be much safer.
- Secure your windows. Fit locks on your windows, and like the alarm, remember to actually use them before you leave the house and before you go to bed at night. In the warmer months, try to avoid leaving windows open overnight, as this is an easy entryway for someone hoping to break in. Keep your windows in good condition too. Rusty locks and rotten frames make access very easy, so repair any damage as soon as you can.
- Hide your valuables. Any valuables like jewellery, expensive electronics, and watches should be kept out of sight of your windows, as they may attract thieves. If you have very valuable pieces, a safe might be a worthwhile investment. If you don’t want safe, lockable drawers are good too. If you don’t lock things away, at least put them away somewhere out of sight when you’re not using them. Don’t keep your cars near the door either. Some burglars break-in in search of car keys so they can easily take your car. Some even will use a rod or other tool to reach through the letterbox to fish keys in dishes or on hooks near the door. Make sure your keys can’t be seen or reached from the door.
