When was the last time you printed photographs? Most of us have the odd picture printed for a special occasion, to fill a particular frame, or because a photo printing service has offered us a great deal. But if we compare the thousands of photos on our camera rolls to the few that we’ve taken the time to have printed, we see that we aren’t really printing many at all.
Most of us just keep our photos on our phones. We use online storage and services to make organising our pictures easy, and we just look at them on our phones or tablets if we want to remember something or show a friend. We’re generally more likely to share a photo on social media than we are to print it.
Why should we? What’s the point of taking the time and expense of printing photos when we always have them in our pockets or bags anyway? Well, even in the digital age, there are plenty of great reasons to get your favourite pictures printed out. Here are seven of the best.
To Display Your Memories
You might have a digital frame that displays a few pictures on rotation. But it’s not the same as having a gallery wall or a picture shelf filled with framed photos of special memories and people. Printing photos and displaying them on your walls, shelves, and sideboards is a great way to remember special occasions, but also to honour those memories.
Printing Gives You Options
You can print in a variety of sizes and on different materials. You could print a photo book, a large canvas, calendars, small or large photos, and even have photos printed on homeware.
Printed Photos Will Make You a Better Photographer
When we know that we’re going to print our photos, we take far more care. Years ago, when we used film cameras and had a limited number of shots, we were far more selective with what we took photos of, but also with our framing and composition. Choosing to print means that you take more time to get it right.
Technology isn’t Perfect
Technology is great, but it’s certainly not perfect. Phones crash, we lose internet connection, cloud services fail, and suddenly we can’t access our photos. You’ll always have access to printed pictures.
We Rarely Look at Phone Pics
Having all of your photos on your phone is certainly convenient. But how often do you actually look at them? How often do you sit and look at the photos of your last holiday in detail, taking your time to remember the events? We’re more likely to spend time with a physical album filled with great pictures.
Physical Photos Make Great Gifts
A framed photo, a photo book, or an album all make fantastic gifts, especially for grandparents and other relatives.
Digital Frames Use Power
We’re all looking for ways to save power and cut our energy bills. A photo frame is cheaper than a digital frame, and there are no energy costs down the line.
Digital photos are great, and for many, digital storage is a great solution. But there will always be a place for printed photographs.
