Being pregnant doesn’t have to mean compromising on style! When deciding what to buy, just follow these seven tips for flattering and fashionable maternity wear.
More choice than ever
Many fashion stores now stock a great range of chic and cheap maternity clothes, making looking and feeling good throughout your pregnancy easier than ever before. For a maternity wardrobe that you’ll love wearing, just follow these tips.
1. Know what suits you
You may have a clear idea what suits your non-pregnant body shape, but our bodies all develop differently when we’re pregnant and it’s best to try on different styles before you buy. Take along a friend who can help you decide which items flatter you and which are best avoided.
2. Avoid big and baggy stuff
Don’t be tempted to buy large unfitted shirts, T-shirts or jeans, which will make you look and feel enormous. Look for fitted maternity clothes that fit closely around the shoulders and legs, accentuating your assets.
3. Get the basics right
Stylish maternity jeans, comfy maternity leggings, easy-to-wear maternity tops, a neutral dress and a properly fitting bra are the essentials every woman needs. Get these basics right and you’ll never be without something to wear. It’s equally important when looking at the basics to consider the best maternity underwear too. I have linked a great article that looks at this in more detail.
4. Empire lines
Empire lines from regular fashion stores are a great buy for anyone who has just discovered they are pregnant. The loose fabric beneath the bust will flow over small bumps with plenty of space for it to grow. Once you need some support for your bump, empire line tunics and dresses can continue to be worn with maternity leggings.
5. Belly bands
A belly band or two is another great economical buy. They provide support to your bump while helping keep you covered up in jeans or skirts that sit beneath your bump.
6. Stylish flat shoes
Most women prefer flat shoes during pregnancy as feet often swell and the extra weight being carried leaves feet feeling tired and achy after a day in heels.
Fortunately, flat sandals are a hot trend for this summer, while flat over-the-knee ’60s-style boots are tipped to be the next big thing for autumn and winter.
7. Have fun
Take a tip from Beyoncé, who says she had lots of fun choosing maternity clothes: “You know there is this variety of beautiful clothes that can bring out whatever you feel inside,” she told CNN.
With so many retailers now selling cool maternity wear, there’s no reason why you too can’t have fun picking out what to wear. You can do maternity bodycon like Beyoncé, elegant chic like Kate Middleton or fun and hip like Busy Phillips. Or why not have fun with slogan tees or this season’s prints?
With so many great choices out there, you’ll have a great time shopping for maternity wear.
