I’ve written before about how big a fan I am of World Book Day, but also how uninterested I am in the whole competitive parenting side of it. I like my costumes to be simple, and all about the book, not about how amazing *ahem* I am with sewing machine. From previous years we have had great fun going though ideas of stories Miss N has read, and what she would like to dress as.
Here is Miss N from two years ago :
She was Lucy Pevensie from The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, it was such an easy but effective costume. We bought a coat, that we could use again, we already had a beret. We only needed to make the evacuee tag and gas mask box.
Last year, my little girl grew up, and as a tween wanted a cool costume, that had a fashionable feel to it. We went for this Hunger Games outfit, as the book was, and is still a favourite. The only thing we bought was a badge for a few pounds, the rest we already had.
This year both of my girls will be joining in, I’ve only got a photograph of Miss A for now as Dorothy from The Wizard of OZ :
I think Bennett the dog makes a great Toto. The only problem is, Miss A want to bring him to school with her too!
I love dressing up, and I’m a little sad that as adults we don’t join in with World Book Day by wearing a book depicting outfit. Actually today Thomas Cook have released a new app for World Book Day. The app requires you to insert your holiday destination and favourite book genre and then suggests the perfect book for your holiday. Well I thought it would be fun to think about my next holiday, the book I would read there, and perhaps the character I could dress up as. I’ve been desperate to visit New York for such a long time, you never know this year may be the year. So how about Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, set in the 1920’s all about the wife of F Scott Fitzgerald of The Great Gatsby fame. Oh I would love to dress up in a flapper dress, with a string of pearls representing the glamorous and constant partying of the couple in New York. Tall Dad would be a make a very dapper F Scott I think!
Well, I’m off now to finish off Miss N’s outfit, once I take a photograph, I will update this post with it tomorrow.
Update : Here is Miss N’s outfit :

I love that these are so simple and yet affective! I saw many a parent panicking over WBD and it really doesn’t have to be so competitive and costly!

These outfits are AMAZING, and I absolutely love the photo of Miss A and Bennett and Dorothy and Toto. I can’t believe how much Miss N has grown up since her Lucy/The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe photo – that only seems like yesterday.
Think the GLAM squad should have a trip to New York! xx

Can you believe it M….Miss A won!!! There is an oscar style ceremony at school and they announced her outfit as the winner for foundation class 🙂

I’m totally with you on the non-competitive thing when it comes to world book day. I see so many amazing outfits i end up thinking, i can’t come up with anything near as amazing and it puts us off trying. This year we let the kids initiate and J simply wanted to be a pirate based on ‘magic marks the spot’ so he used a pirate outfit we already had and we made a simple hat. Your ideas are fabulous! x
Jenny Cottingham says
Well done Miss A, and LOVING Miss N in her outfit xx
