Shampoo Bar – The Shine Bar is Plastic Free
This is the start of a series that I’ve been wanting to do for ages. Everyday objects and products that are environmentally friendly. These will be products that I have bought or been asked to review and will cover some of the most basic items that you use around the home. I want to reflect real life and help you, my readers, to make more environmentally friendly decisions without compromising on style and practicality and of course, its got to actually work! I’m not an expert, and we will definitely be on a learning curve whilst doing this, but it’s better to start now, then delay any longer I think. So let the eco journey begin!
Today is the start and a product that we (nearly) all need to use – shampoo!
A shampoo bar
A shampoo bar is something I have tried before, but many years ago, and I’ll be honest I didn’t enjoy the results. I found it drying on my hair, and it dulled the colour. I was interested if I could get good results now using a shampoo bar on my coloured dry hair, with a very sensitive scalp. Had things changed?
This shine bar of shampoo hopefully means no wasted product, no bulky plastic bottles and no mess, as you also receive a reusable storage tin. Formulated using naturally derived ingredients, the bar is said to last up to four times longer than a standard bottle of liquid shampoo. I think it would be perfect for travel, especially as it’s very gentle and can be used by all of the family. It would be a great one if you were only taking carry on luggage. It was developed by a hairdresser who wanted to give professional hair care results in a shampoo bar. Including quinoa to help prolong the life of hair colour.
My Experience :
So my routine is I always wash my hair in the shower every couple of days, I do this usually because my hair has gotten greasy at the roots, then the length of my hair usually is fine, if a little dry on the ends when I need a trim. My first impressions were that when I opened the bar in the shower it smells amazing very citrusy. Perfect to wake up in the morning. It lathered a lot easier than I thought, and I worked it in easily from root to tip. Once I rinsed it off it felt clean, but not dry and matted, which too harsh a shampoo will do to my hair. I didn’t feel the need to do two shampoos, and I only felt I needed a small amount of conditioner on the very ends.
I am picky when it comes to shampoo, or should I say my scalp is very picky! It’s very rare I can find a shampoo that suits it, and before today I have only been able to find two other shampoos. I am so impressed that I can use this too. Plus it will save me a lot of money, and help me with my eco-journey. So this is a definite buy for me.
Shine Bar creator Jonathan Harries
Jonathan is a hairdresser with over 30 years’ experience and owner of the Shine salon in Brighton, explains why he developed the product :
“I knew many of my clients would find the convenience of a shampoo bar appealing, and are always looking for ways to reduce their plastic consumption. But as a hairdresser it was important to me that there was no compromise on the results of a professional liquid shampoo- I had to create something that I would be happy to use in the salon…the Shine Shampoo Bar was a result of listening to what our clients really want for their hair – beautiful results, using products which helps them do their bit for the planet “

Glad to hear you make the switch. I wonder if you can bring the tin can in their store for a refill so you don’t get another one. Does it drag on the hair when you apply it, or do you lather on the hands first?

That is a great idea! If they don’t I think that would be a great suggestion!
