I am in full spring clean mode, I’m feeling inspired by a great post I read called The Decluttering Mantra, by Penny from The Alexander Residence.
You can read about my oven cleaning exploits HERE.
I have a coat area in the corner of my kitchen dining room, and its been driving me mad. I think especially in winter, when we have lots of coats, hats and scarves then the area just gets really cluttered and untidy.
My tips for coat storage
Declutter
- Only have things that are useful for the season you are in. Put the flip-flops and sunglasses away!
- Make sure everything still fits!
Clean
- Decluttering really is a good excuse to put all the coats etc in the wash.
- Clean and tidy the area.
Boxes
- Everyone needs a box/peg for their hats and gloves.
- Make it part of the routine, as soon as you come home you put everything away.
- My nearly three year old can recognize her name now, so make sure the children can reach the peg or box and be involved too!
Well at the weekend I made sure everyone only had one coat downstairs. I bought some thick plastic boxes from The Range, (I wouldn’t normally go for Union Jacks, but I thought they turned out OK) and set about giving it a bit of a face lift.
I made labels for each of the boxes, so now when we come in, all the hats, gloves an scarves can all be neatly put away. Miss N’s even has enough room for her school bag.
It was really quick and easy, and cost me only £25 (the cost of 4 boxes) and my sanity!
Thank you for reading about my coat storage ideas.

Oh your so organised spring cleaning already! and those boxes are fab i love anything with union jacks on.
We have a nightmare with coats etc in our house as theres nowhere to put a coat hook and gloves hats etc end up being plonked everywhere during the winter with the 2 messy/lazy sods that live with me lol

Thank you. I wish we could out them in the hall, but we don’t have a suitable area there. But at least it looks a bit neater now. I’m in training mode still though with getting them to put everything away 😉

I love you Mrs Gidders, do you know that!? Those are amazing… and I love the labels 😉
A really lovely idea. I need some storage solutions – I think that’s what half out problem is! Too much stuff and no-where to put it!
£25 isn’t bad for 4 boxes either!

That is exactly what I’m trying to concentrate on whilst spring cleaning. We need more storage solutions, but determined to do it on a budget 🙂

Brilliant! Looking good, and I love your tips too. I’ll forgive you the Union Jacks 😉 I’ve yet to decide where our coat area is going to be in the new place, so I’ll be following your lead. I’v been doing tons of decluttering too, and following zenhabits blog, which has loads of great tips. Thanks for a v. inspiring post!

I’ll make up for it on Paddy’s Day 😉
