Well it’s been a busy few weeks getting it together, but we are finally ready to show you Nia’s Bedroom makeover. The biggest makeover I’ve ever showcased on the blog. If you didn’t see what the room was like before, and why we were changing it, you might like to read this post which goes into more detail.
I’m going to show more of the room over the coming weeks, and adding finishing touches, however I couldn’t resist showing you the room, and all its changes in this video I made :
Nia absolutely loves it, and who can blame her, we all do! Some of the details are amazing, we even got some cool technology in there, that I will sharing with you. I can’t quite believe how much extra storage she now has. I’m going to save the insides of the Hammonds wardrobe and cupboards for another post, but thought I would look at the design details of the room as a whole in this post
The colours we went for slightly changed as the room came together, Nia knew she wanted to use a teal, and a warmer colour on the walls. I had a bit of a wobble though and wasn’t sure it would come together, I had a little chat with my fellow blogger Jen from Love Chic Living, and then it came to me one evening…a dark blue would help bring it all together! The colours I choose all come from the Valspar range, the blue is Midnight Sonata (R172A), it actually came out slightly lighter than I would have ideally liked, but its a bright room, so I think that effected it, Ginger Kitten (X55) is the warm golden colour.
We asked a friend who is an expert at laying floors to help us with the vinyl flooring from Harvey Maria. He said it was great quality, and very simple for him to lay. The finish on the Lunar wood effect flooring is amazing, there seemed to be lots of different patterned planks, the variety really adds to how authentic it looks. You can see that the vinyl flooring really does look natural, like planks of bleached wood really, even the surface is slightly embossed, it’s priced at £49.90 per sq metre.
I have wanted to use Harvey Maria for many years, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again. I’m going to be more adventurous next time though, and go for a strong design and colour. What we needed to achieve in Nia’s room was different, as she wanted flooring that was most importantly light in colour, and kept the room feeling calm and spacious, a backdrop for the dark and stronger colours that we’d already decided on. It was the perfect result!
Top of the wish list were display shelves in the room, and a special request from Nia (as she’d seen it somewhere else) was that behind the shelves, we find a map wallpaper that would work. Well Love Maps On came up trumps with this request, and we had the pick of different world and vintage map designs, we went for a custom OS map.
This really cool wallpaper, shows Nottingham, including the street that we live on. It’s actually self adhesive, and reusable, so a great investment. Its re-positionable too, so if you make a mistake, you can adjust it. It feels thick like fabric, sharp in print quality, even though its blown up to a considerable size. The company sell posters, canvases, cushions and wallpaper, all custom printed.
We also had a new blind made. It took us a while to decide on the style, but we went for a cream wooden Ventian from Web-Blinds. The window is huge, and Web-Blinds were incredibly good value for money, this came out at around £90. The style is contemporary but classic, and it seemed to make sense, so we could use it to angle the sunlight. Its built exactly to your size needs, and my husband fitted it with ease.
We wanted to add a little texture to the room, and even though the flooring is warm under foot, we thought it would be a good idea to add a rug for this. Nia has always loved sheepskin ones, and we found an amazing one from Snug Rugs, a grey and white, Icelandic sheepskin, they are apparently the highest quality grade of sheepskin you can buy. Well we think it looks and feels absolutely stunning! It’s a great shape, you can see it in more detail on the video above.
A new bed was definitely high on the list, and we needed something that was great quality, and would fit in with the overall design of the room. We chose Button & Sprung for the bed, as they really are an amazing bespoke company, that tailor make the bed to your design, you just need to follow the design options on the website.
We already had a headboard that had been made by Hammonds in a Design Guild Fabric, so we managed to match that on the Button & Sprung divan base perfectly. They offer fabric samples, so you really make sure it matches you room design. The beds are made in the UK and are guaranteed for 10 years. A single divan is very reasonably priced from £275.
Now the duvet was one I picked up in the sale, as is the teal fabric at the bottom of the bed, a bargain at John Lewis in the remnant bin for £5.
We haven’t quite sorted how we are going to dress the shelves as yet, as Nia is still working on that.
The teal arrow light (£60) you can see on the wall is from Graham and Brown. I love how it directs your eye to the map wallpaper. Its battery operated, so was simple to put up, and no messy wires anywhere.
You might have spotted in the video that we haven’t put a shade up in the room, as we have used instead a Sengled Pulse LED light – 179.99 euros, we used the other (as two came in the pack) in the anglepoise floor lamp. They are not only a dimmable LED light but also a wireless speaker. Perfect for a teenagers room. I’m going to review it in another more detailed blog post, as its such a fab product, so stay tuned for that.
I am a Graham and Brown Ambassador for 2015, and I’ve been lucky enough to have been given both the light and the Butterfly Print (Flock of Butterflies – £70) you can see above. The print I think really brings everything in the room together. Its 80cm squared so makes a great visual impact.
So what do you think, a room definitely fit for a teenager? I think its fit for a worn out lifestyle blogger too.
Disclosure : Even though items such as the Hammonds bedroom furniture – Vigo, bed, floor and wallpaper are review items, my thoughts and words are mine, and as ever, honest ones.

The makeover is great – fit for a teen! My own teen is having her room done at the moment too- we’re giving her a dressing room and she wants a new floor and walls… She needs a more grown up room now rather than ‘baby pink!’ As your post contains video, I’d like to feature it on my next round-up for BritMums if you’re happy?
Amanda Cottingham says
Thanks Nadine that would be amazing 🙂

Wow that’s a huge change it looks brilliant. We are currently looking to see what we can do for our teen’s bedroom, he desperately wants to fit a desk into his room as he finds the little people too distracting when trying to work. I love the map idea, it looks really cool 🙂
